ELI 157 Advanced Grammar Through Writing

Course Syllabus Spring 2003

Week 0
   Course introduction; diagnostic test and writing assignment
    Introduction to Nicenet, www.nicenet.org. Division into groups.
    Homework assignment - due by April 8

Read pages 2-7 about verb tenses. Write 1-2 paragraphs about buying something, using at least four different verb tenses.

Log into Nicenet. Go to Conferencing, then to your group (Group 1, Group 2, Group 3, Group 4, or Group 5). Copy and paste your essay into a new message.

Specific topics for the rest of the term will depend on weak areas identified in the diagnostic test.

Weeks 1 and 2
Part 1 (Units 1, 2, and 3) Tense and Time: Selected Topics
Unit 1: Look at pages 4-7. Place each tense on a timeline. (Word doc)

HW: read pp16-17, 19-21. Do p22. Add [ ] around verbs in your Nicenet posting. Are they correct?

Unit 2: Look at pages 19-21. Do timeline. (br) Look at pp16-17 reading. What tenses? Why?
Computer room: Open a link from Nicenet; find examples of pres, pres cont, pres perfect, past, past cont. Copy and paste into a Word document (use "grammar-verbs" in Nicenet Documents). Think about why.

HW: Read 33-34, do p. 40

Unit 2: Go over verbs found in the readings. Find and fix the errors on p.28.

HW: Look at p33-34, find examples of pres (habit), pres cont (now), pres perfect, past, future in past, past perf, future.

Unit 3: Go over Notes pp34-39. Check homework verb tenses pp33-34; check p.40 - why?
Do p.52-53- independent vs dependent clauses.

HW: Write a paragraph about a place that you have visited that you do NOT recommend. Include what happened and why someone else should not go there. Use at least 6 different verb tenses. (If you can't think of anywhere bad, read one of the linked articles and tell it as if it had happened to you.) Read pp59-60. How should people behave when they visit you?

   Part III (Units 6,7, 8 and 9) Nouns: Selected Topics

Weeks 5 and 6
   Part IV (Units 10 and 11) Adjective Clauses: Selected Topics
    Midterm exam

Week 7 and 8
   Part V (Units 12 and 13) Passive Voice: Selected Topics
   Essay #2

Weeks 9 and 10
   Review
   Final exam on June 5
    Wrap-up and discussion
