Class meeting times: Tuesday and Thursday 12:30-2:00 in
Kidder 33
Optional (unsupervised) lab time: Monday 12:30-2:00 in
Kidder 33
Note: No food or drink is allowed in Kidder 33.
Material: one or two high-density diskettes (available from
the Computer Base, Fred Meyer, etc.). Please bring a diskette by the
second class meeting on Tuesday.
Optional texts available at the bookstore: Way of the
Ferret by Judi Harris (Internet tools for teachers); Something
to Do on Tuesday by Deborah Healey (ESL lesson plans using
computers)
Readings online and on reserve at the OSU library
Course Requirements
- Keep a notebook with class readings, handouts, and your
electronic journal (e-journal) printouts.
- Send an electronic journal (e-journal) entry to me at
Deborah.Healey@orst.edu where you discuss what you have learned
and what it has meant to you (or other topic as listed in the
homework section in the syllabus).
- Attend classes and participate in class discussions and
hands-on activities.
- Work collaboratively with other students on group projects.
The midterm and final exam will be collaborative projects.
- Do the assigned homework.
Course Outcomes

- Students will explore the technological changes taking place
in schools, the workplace, and the curriculum.

- Students will be introduced to and use many of the processes
and tools of technological change, particularly computer-based
tools.

- Students will examine ways to use technology in restructuring
schools and communities, particularly in enabling dialogue between
language minority communities and schools.

interviews
- Students will examine ways to use technology in their school
reform efforts, particularly in enhancing access to a 21st century
education for language minority students.

activities, group discussions
- Students will examine new technologies and their impact on
education and the workplace.
Activities: Readings, critiques of readings, group discussions,
site visits
- Students will demonstrate their ability to use
telecommunications, including electronic mail, discussion lists,
and newsgroups.

- Students will demonstrate their ability to evaluate software
packages and Internet resources for their use in classroom
teaching, particularly in classes with limited English proficient
students.

- Students will demonstrate their ability to create lesson plans
to use software and Internet resources to meet curricular goals.

- Students will demonstrate their ability to use a presentation
program or the Web to disseminate information about using
technology in teaching and school reform to their colleagues.

15 points e-journal
15 points participation in class activities
20 points other homework (critiques, software evaluation,
customized lessons, lesson plans, etc.)
20 points midterm
30 points final project
